Signs your air conditioner is failing
When the heat goes up, you need an air conditioner that will not let you down. A unit on its way out almost always gives you warning first.

When an air conditioner breaks down, repairing it is the natural first thought. Sometimes a new system is the cheaper answer over the next few years. Here is how to tell which one you are looking at.
How often it needs repairs
If you are calling for repairs more often each season, that money is better put toward a new unit than spent again on the old one.
What the repair costs
Compare the repair quote against what a new system costs. When a single repair is a large share of a replacement, replacing usually wins.
What it costs to run
Older air conditioners use more power to do the same job than current high-efficiency models, so an old unit keeps charging you every month it runs.

Common AC error codes and what they mean
Seeing a code on the thermostat or the unit itself? Here is what the system could be telling you.
| Error code | What it means |
|---|---|
| E1 / E2 | Sensor malfunction. The indoor or outdoor temperature sensor is not reading correctly, which can cause spotty cooling or a total shutdown. |
| E3 | Fan speed error. The indoor fan motor is spinning too fast or too slow, which leads to airflow problems or overheating. |
| E4 | High temperature protection. The unit is overheating because of dirty filters, dirty coils or low refrigerant. Shut it down and call us. |
| F0 | Low refrigerant or a leak detected. Losing refrigerant hurts cooling and can damage the compressor if it is ignored. |
| EC | Refrigerant leak detected. A newer code that flags a pressure drop from a leak. Needs attention quickly. |
| H3 | Compressor overload. The system is working too hard, which can come from poor maintenance, wiring faults or a failing part. |
| P4 | Inverter module protection. An electrical fault in the control side of the system. Needs diagnosis and repair. |

What maintenance should I perform on my AC unit?
Four things you can do yourself to keep the system working and make it last.
- Change the filter every one to three months. The filter catches dust, pollen and pet hair. Once it clogs, the system cannot pull air through it and has to work harder for less cooling.
- Clean the evaporator coils. Coils caked in grime cannot move heat. It is the same as asking the system to cool your house wearing a winter coat.
- Clear out debris. Leaves, grass clippings and dirt block airflow through the outdoor unit. Keep roughly two feet of clear space around it.
- Straighten bent coil fins. The fins are thin aluminium and bend easily. Bent fins restrict airflow, so the system runs longer for the same result. Use a fin comb, gently.
The surest way to know the system is ready for summer is to book an AC tune-up and have it checked properly.
