Bathroom upgrades that start with the plumbing
Our plumbers plan bathroom work around what runs behind the wall before anything is chosen for the front of it: water quality, water temperature, drainage and ventilation. Finishes matter, but a heated floor over hard water, or a rain head on an undersized line, disappoints on the first cold morning.
Whether you are after lower running costs, a spa-style shower or fixtures you can control from a phone, we scope the work, put the price in writing before anyone starts, and install it with Alberta Indoor Comfort employees. Calgary and area.
Start with the water: quality, safety and system life
A bathroom is only as good as the water feeding it. These three upgrades sit upstream of everything you can see.
-
Whole-home water softeners
Calgary is a hard water city. Softening the supply reduces the scale that shortens the life of taps, shower cartridges and water heaters, and it changes how the water feels and lathers in the shower.
-
Anti-scald and thermostatic mixing valves
A mixing valve holds the outlet temperature where you set it, so the shower does not spike or drop when a tap runs, a toilet fills or the washing machine draws elsewhere in the house.
-
Smart leak detection and shut-off
Sensors under the sink and behind the toilet, or a monitor on the main, catch water where it should not be and close the supply before it reaches the ceiling below.
Spreading the cost is an option on work like this. See payment plans.
Faucets, fixtures and spa-style features
Two of the ranges we fit most often in Calgary bathrooms.
Vessel bathroom faucets
The vessel series stands tall over a countertop basin, with straight lines and a plain spout. It suits a bathroom where the basin itself is the feature and the tap is meant to stay out of its way. Chrome finish, built for the wear a daily-use basin gets.
Basin bathroom faucets
Made to sit with an undermount sink, in four finishes: matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel and polished chrome. Pick the finish once and carry it through the shower trim, the towel rail and the door furniture so the room reads as one decision.
Lighting that works at 6am and at 10pm
Lighting sets the tone of a bathroom and decides whether the practical jobs in it are easy.
- LED backlit mirrors with defoggers
- A heating pad behind the glass keeps a patch clear after a hot shower, and the light comes off the mirror itself instead of a fixture behind your head.
- Motion-sensor and accent lighting
- Low-level light that comes on when you walk in, so a night visit does not mean the full ceiling fitting.
- Recessed and task lighting
- Light aimed at the vanity, the bath and the shower rather than one fixture in the middle of the ceiling. Shaving and make-up get easier and the room reads larger.
- Heat lamps and dimmers
- A ceiling heater for the minute after a shower, and dimmers so the same room can be bright at seven and low at ten.
Vanities, counters and storage
A bathroom with nowhere to put things ends up with everything on the counter. Cabinetry is where that gets solved.
- Floating vanities with undermount lighting
- Mounted clear of the floor, so the floor cleans in one pass and the room keeps its sightlines.
- Quartz and solid-surface counters
- Non-porous, so water and toothpaste sit on top rather than soaking in, and they take the wear of a family bathroom.
- Built-in storage
- Drawer inserts sized for make-up, grooming tools and the daily bits, so they live in a drawer instead of beside the tap.
- Hidden hampers and appliance garages
- Laundry and hairdryers behind a cabinet door instead of on show.
- Retiled showers with built-in niches
- Recessed shelving set into the wall while the tiling is open, so bottles are not balanced on the edge of the bath.
Safe and accessible, without looking clinical
Worth planning now if the bathroom serves more than one generation, or if you intend to stay in the house.
- Design-friendly grab bars
- Grab bars now come in the same finishes as the taps, and several double as a towel rail or a shelf.
- Barrier-free floating vanities
- Open underneath, so someone in a wheelchair or seated at the basin can get to it.
- Fold-down shower benches and slip-resistant floors
- A seat that folds flat to the wall, over floor tile rated for wet traction.
- Wider doorways and zero-threshold showers
- No lip to step over at the shower, and a door opening wide enough for a walker or a chair.
Ventilation that clears the room
A bathroom fan has one job: move the moisture out before it settles into the paint, the grout and the drywall.
- Exhaust fans with humidity sensors
- The fan starts when humidity climbs and keeps running until it drops, whether or not anyone remembered the switch. Keeping moisture down is what keeps mould and mildew from getting a foothold.
- Quiet running
- Rated for low noise, so the ensuite fan is not the reason the bathroom can be heard from the bedroom.
Comfort and entertainment
Small additions, and the ones people notice every day.
- Heated floors with programmable thermostats
- Warm tile underfoot on a schedule, so the floor is already warm when the alarm goes rather than an hour later.
- Towel warmers and heated drawers
- A warm towel at the end of a shower, and somewhere to keep the next one warm.
- Waterproof televisions and Bluetooth speakers
- Rated for a wet room, so the electronics belong there instead of being carried in and set on the cistern.
- Water features and decorative wall panels
- Sound and texture, for a bathroom meant to be somewhere you stay a while.
