The Right Tool for the Right Blockage
A drain snake (auger) mechanically breaks through a blockage — fast, inexpensive, and effective for most residential clogs. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water (3,000–4,000 PSI) to scour the pipe walls clean — grease, scale, root intrusion — restoring full pipe diameter rather than just punching a hole through the obstruction.
For most kitchen and bathroom drain blockages, snaking is the right first step. Recurring blockages, grease-laden kitchen lines, slow main drains, and root intrusion all warrant hydro-jetting. We assess the cause with camera before recommending the method.
Drain Clearing by Location
Kitchen Drain
Grease, food solids, and soap accumulate on kitchen drain walls and at the P-trap. Recurring kitchen blockages typically need hydro-jetting to clear grease buildup through the full run — snaking a grease line provides only temporary relief.
Bathroom Drain (Tub & Shower)
Hair, soap, and shampoo residue build up at the drain basket and in the trap. We remove the basket, clear the trap, and confirm the drain runs freely to the stack. Most bathroom drains respond well to snaking.
Main Sewer Line
A slow or blocked main line affects every drain in the house simultaneously. Camera inspection identifies the cause — grease, root intrusion, or structural issues — before we clear it. We recommend hydro-jetting for roots and recurring main line problems.
What Every AIC Drain Cleaning Service Includes
Diagnose
We assess the drain type, configuration, and accessibility, and diagnose the exact cause of the blockage — organic buildup, grease, scale, foreign object, hygiene products, or root intrusion — before we touch a tool.
Clear & Restore
We mechanically clear the obstruction and restore proper flow through the trap, branch line, or main sewer lateral, then test drainage performance with a controlled, whole-home flow test.
Inspect & Advise
We inspect visible piping for leaks, corrosion, or improper slope, assess trap and venting condition, check for early warning signs of root intrusion or deterioration, and advise you of our findings — plus recommendations for prevention, camera inspection, or protective upgrades like backwater valves where appropriate.
Camera Inspection — Included With Every Main Line Job
We put a camera down the drain before and after clearing to show you exactly what caused the blockage and confirm it's fully cleared. You see the same footage we see.
Whole-Home Drain Maintenance Plans
Complete Home Drain Cleaning Maintenance
- Perform cleaning and flow restoration of up to ten (10) interior branch drains — sink, toilet, tub/shower, laundry line, floor drain, etc.
- Perform diagnostic evaluation and mechanical cleaning of the main sewer line
- Conduct a whole-home drainage performance test following cleaning
- Evaluate for buildup patterns (grease, scale, hair, hygiene products) indicating systemic issues
- Assess for early warning signs of root intrusion, deterioration, or structural concerns
- Provide a summary of system condition and long-term maintenance recommendations, plus recommendations for protection upgrades such as backwater valves or pipe repair
Home Drain Cleaning Maintenance
The same comprehensive whole-home inspection and diagnostic process as our Complete plan, scaled to four interior branch drains plus your main sewer line — ideal for smaller homes or a lighter maintenance cycle.
- Perform cleaning and flow restoration of up to four (4) interior branch drains — sink, toilet, tub/shower, laundry line, floor drain, etc.
- Perform diagnostic evaluation and mechanical cleaning of the main sewer line
- Provide preventative guidance tailored to your home's occupancy and usage patterns
Drain Cleaning Questions
My drain unblocks but slows again within a month — why?
A recurring slow drain that responds to snaking and quickly recurs usually means the obstruction (grease, scale, or roots) wasn't fully removed — snaking punched a hole through it rather than clearing the pipe wall. Hydro-jetting is the solution: it scours the entire pipe circumference, removing the buildup rather than piercing it. A camera inspection before and after confirms the pipe is fully cleared. If it recurs after proper hydro-jetting, there's a structural issue (belly in the line, offset joint) that needs a different repair.
Are chemical drain cleaners (Drano etc.) safe to use?
We don't recommend them. Caustic chemical cleaners can soften PVC pipe, damage rubber seals, and are dangerous to handle. They also don't remove the material causing the blockage — they partially dissolve it, leaving residue on pipe walls that continues to attract buildup. The grease or hair that caused the original blockage remains. Enzymatic treatments (non-caustic) are safe for maintenance but not effective for an active blockage. Call us.
I think I have root intrusion in my sewer line — what should I do?
Root intrusion in a Calgary sewer line (typically from the elm, ash, or cottonwood trees prevalent here) is progressive — roots find any joint gap and expand. Camera inspection confirms it. Hydro-jetting with a root-cutting head clears the blockage. If roots have caused pipe collapse or offset joints, a repair or lining may be needed — the camera shows us exactly what we're dealing with before we recommend anything.
