What a patio heater actually does
These are gas-fired infrared heaters. They warm people and surfaces directly — the way sun does — instead of trying to heat open air you cannot contain outdoors. Variable output (typically 50–100%) lets you dial heat for a quiet evening or a full gathering.

Gas vs electric
Natural gas wins for frequent Calgary use: lower hourly cost, no tank swaps, and enough BTU for real outdoor seating. Electric units can suit small covered nooks or where gas is impractical — we will say so on the consult if that is the better fit.

Do I need a gas line?
Natural gas units need a line. Our gasfitters can run a new line from the home supply as part of the install — heater mounting and safety check included, so you are not coordinating a second trade.
How much does it cost to run?
At full 75,000 BTU output, expect under $0.75/hour. At about half capacity, under $0.40/hour. Propane patio heaters typically cost more per hour and need tank refills.
Will it work in Calgary cold?
Radiant infrared warms people directly, so it stays useful in cool, breezy weather. A covered or partly enclosed patio gets the best result.
Can I install it myself?
No for the gas connection — Alberta requires a licensed gasfitter, and improper gas work is a real liability. We handle line, mount, and code compliance as one job.
