Why Ductless

When Ductless Is the Right Answer

AIC technician mounting a ductless mini-split indoor head unit on a wall in an older Calgary home

Most Calgary homes built before 1980 have ductwork sized for heating only — running central AC through that system can cause pressure problems, poor airflow, and expensive duct modifications. A ductless mini-split bypasses all of that. The indoor head unit mounts on the wall, connects to an outdoor compressor through a small penetration in the wall, and delivers cooling (and heating in heat-pump mode) exactly where you need it.

  • No ductwork required — installs in a day
  • Individual zone control — cool only the rooms you're using
  • Heat pump mode provides heating down to −25°C on cold-climate models
  • Quiet indoor units — 19–26 dB at low speed
  • SEER ratings of 20–30+ — significantly more efficient than window units
System Types

Single-Zone, Multi-Zone, or Multi-Split

Single-Zone Mini-Split

One outdoor unit connected to one indoor head. Best for a single room, addition, or garage that needs independent climate control. Simplest installation, lowest cost, easiest to service. Ideal starting point for most Calgary homeowners.

Multi-Zone Mini-Split

One outdoor unit connected to 2–5 indoor heads — each in a different room or zone. All zones run off one compressor with individual room control. More efficient than multiple single-zone units when cooling several areas simultaneously.

Ducted Mini-Split

A compact, quiet air handler installed in a ceiling cavity connected to short duct runs in each room. Provides the invisible install of a central system with the efficiency and zoning flexibility of a mini-split. Good for renovations where aesthetics matter.

The Case for Ductless

Why Install a Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner?

Small homes and apartments without a lot of space, and homes that never had ductwork built in, can enjoy a ductless mini split AC system — and here's how.

Saves Energy

Energy escapes through ducts no matter how well sealed they are. You can lose up to 30% of your energy through ducts, which makes the ductless system more efficient.

Makes You Safer

Having a window unit gives intruders easy access to your home. A ductless mini split air conditioner means no more open windows, thus keeping you safer.

Better Flexibility

Let's say you want to cool different rooms independently from one another — a ductless mini split system lets you do that, where you're stuck with the same temperature for every room with a central AC unit.

In Depth

10 Best Reasons to Choose a Ductless AC System

1. Ductless vs. Portable or Window "Shaker" AC

Choose a ductless air conditioner for efficiency, noise, aesthetics and low maintenance. Get that bulky, space taking, view-obstructing, noisy AC unit out of your bedroom or window for good! A ductless AC system offers a sleeker appearance, remarkable efficiency (saving you money), unparalleled quietness and comfort, and maintenance-free operation.

2. How Do Ductless AC Systems Work?

Ductless units come either as a single zone (one inside unit with one outdoor condenser) or multi-zone systems (multiple inside units connected to one outdoor condenser). Whether you want just cooling or cooling and heating, its flexibility is enormous. Ductless systems use the same process for cooling as a typical whole-home central air conditioning system — however, instead of using your furnace to blow cold air into your whole home through the ducts, the ductless unit blows cooled air directly into one space.

3. Lower Your Bills

A ductless system can help you greatly reduce your monthly energy bills because it uses substantially less energy (due to a high SEER rating) and has no losses through traditional HVAC ductwork; this means your bills will drop dramatically! On average, you can save 30% to 40% per month on utility bills by switching to a ductless air conditioner.

4. Space Efficient

One main advantage of ductless AC systems is its space-saving design. On the outside of your home, it has a smaller footprint than a whole-home condenser, better fitting in tighter areas such as adjacent to townhouses or new, tightly spaced single homes. On the inside, ductless mini split systems blend into your space without standing out: they can be installed in the ceiling or inside a wall, surface mounted high out of the way, as floor units, in utility closets, or even under your bed.

5. Ductless AC Systems Are Quiet

The library, the background in a concert hall, or your bedroom at night is 30 decibels of sound. Normal conversation is 60 to 70 decibels. Indoor ductless cooling units are barely over 30 dB — with an average noise level of 32 decibels, ductless systems are not only whisper quiet, they're virtually undetectable. The quietness of a ductless system helps you fall asleep and eliminates noise typically experienced with traditional HVAC systems.

6. Improves Indoor Air Quality

Ductless systems come with baseline filtration which provides cleaner air in whichever room they're in. If you require higher-quality air treatment than standard in a specific space, the ductless system is a great enabler for unique treatment solutions requiring ventilation and temperature control — it's also a great solution for a condo, apartment, or space with radiant heating but limited ventilation, giving you improved air treatment without the noise of a typical portable air cleaning unit.

7. Individual Room Comfort Control

Unlike whole-home cooling systems, since its invention in 1959 ductless AC gives you the ability to individually control each cooling device — each wall, ceiling, or floor unit can have a different temperature. This way you're able to set the temperature for each room uniquely, saving many disagreements related to temperature discomfort. You also don't waste your money cooling or heating rooms that you don't use — for example, not cooling bedrooms during the day since the main floor isn't connected to the same system.

8. Easy to Maintain

Maintaining the ductless unit is incredibly straightforward: all that's required is replacing your unit's filter on a regular basis! Periodically, bring your trusted AC expert like Alberta Indoor Comfort to thoroughly wash out and disinfect your system.

9. Ideal for Condos, Sunrooms & Home Offices

Space is limited or at a premium in many locations. A ductless system delivers your comfort needs without taking up valuable space. The condenser tucks away on your deck, roof, or brackets outside; refrigerant lines and power wires run inside the walls or ceiling and are neatly covered with molding or bulkheads — you'll barely know the system is there.

10. Helps You Manage Heat

Hot flashes are a reality for many. The instant cooled air from your close-to-the-bedside, so-quiet-you-don't-even-know-it's-there ductless unit drapes you or your partner in a shroud of comfort.

FAQ

Ductless Mini-Split Questions

Can a mini-split heat as well as cool?

Yes. Most mini-splits we install are heat pumps — they provide both cooling and heating. Cold-climate models (rated for operation down to −25°C to −30°C) can serve as a primary heating source for Calgary winters. At extreme cold, efficiency drops (COP approaches 1.0) but the unit continues operating. For primary heating in Alberta, we recommend a cold-climate rated unit — standard models lose significant capacity below −10°C.

How long does installation take?

A standard single-zone mini-split installation (wall mount head, line set through exterior wall, outdoor unit) takes 4–6 hours. Multi-zone installations take a full day. The home is typically liveable throughout — there's no major disruption.

Where is the best place to mount the indoor unit?

High on an interior wall, roughly 6–8 inches from the ceiling, on the wall opposite the main occupancy area. The unit should be able to draw room air from behind and deliver conditioned air in a long arc across the room. Avoid placement above doors, in corners, or directly above furniture. We assess placement at the quote — proper placement significantly affects comfort and efficiency.
