Why cooling matters more than comfort
Room temperature affects sleep quality, focus and how you feel through the day. It also affects the house itself: excess heat and trapped moisture are what let organic growth get started. And running a whole-home air conditioner when a single ductless head would do is money leaving through the meter.
Summers in Turner Valley and area can be genuinely hard, particularly when the windows have to stay shut because of wildfire smoke. Alberta Indoor Comfort has served Turner Valley and area for nearly thirty years as a family-owned company, installing, repairing and maintaining cooling systems.
Your options, and where each one makes sense
Whole-home central air conditioning
The familiar cube-shaped condenser outside the house. An evaporator coil sits on top of your furnace or fan coil, and the furnace blower pushes cooled air through your existing ductwork. Note that it is the blower running when the air conditioner is on, not the whole furnace.
Heat moves out of the house using refrigerant. It arrives at the evaporator coil as a liquid, absorbs heat as it turns to gas, and the cooled coil chills the air passing over it.
The strength is simplicity: one outdoor condenser, one indoor coil. The trade-off is that it needs ductwork, and every room gets the same air whether it wants it or not, so cooling the whole house to fix one bedroom costs you. Leaking ductwork is a common problem that sends cooled air into the wall cavities instead of the room, and we can address that.
Ductless mini split
Because a mini split needs no ductwork, it can go almost anywhere, which makes it a strong option for additions, renovations and rooms the ducts never served properly. They cool a space quickly.
Single-zone means one outdoor condenser to one indoor head. Multi-zone runs several indoor heads off one condenser, and each head sets its own temperature, so rooms stop fighting each other. Indoor heads come as high wall, one-way cassette, four-way mini cassette, floor or wall console, or a ducted air handler. The outdoor units are slim side-discharge, so they fit tighter lot lines than a central condenser. Samsung systems come with SmartThings, so the system joins the rest of your home in one app.
Mechanical ventilation
Not everyone wants the house at 17-19 degrees. The “summer fan” approach uses your furnace or air handler blower to move cooler make-up air from outside, or from the basement, through the house. The moving air reads as cooler.
Some homes already have a fan-on switch at the furnace or wired into the thermostat. Many have neither because the original installer was cutting cost. We can add either.
It is the lowest-cost option, sometimes free if you already have it. The limits are real though: it will not reach the temperature most people want for sleeping, and if the outdoor air is carrying pollen or smoke, that comes inside with it, because the fan runs more or less continuously to do anything at all.
Air source heat pumps
Most central and many ductless systems cool only. A heat pump cools the same way but also runs in reverse to heat, which covers the shoulder seasons and a good part of winter on max-heat systems. You keep the furnace to carry the deep cold.
Think of it as a two-way air conditioner. Heat pumps are available in both central and ductless configurations. This refers to air-source heat pumps, which exchange heat with outdoor air. Ground-source systems use buried piping or wells, need a much larger investment and significant work to the yard. We support both; most homeowners choose air source.
Portable, window and wall units
Portable air conditioners cool a specific room with no permanent installation beyond venting to a window. They are convenient but loud, more expensive to run than a permanent system, and need a window to reject heat through.
Built-in wall units mount permanently through an exterior wall, which needs a framed sleeve and sometimes structural work. They are more secure and quieter than a portable, and usually a smaller investment than a mini split unless the wall pass-through turns into a structural job.
Fans
Well-placed fans can carry you through a warm stretch by moving air rather than cooling it. Opening windows helps at night, but it also opens a path for smoke, allergens, smells and noise.
Signs your air conditioner needs service
Most systems warn you before they stop.
- Warm air. A unit blowing warm or hot air can mean a failing compressor or a refrigerant leak.
- Pooling liquid. Moisture around the unit might be a blocked drain tube, or it might be leaking refrigerant.
- Banging or grinding. Air conditioners run quietly. Whining, grinding or banging means call someone.
- Foul odour. The air should smell clean. If it does not, something is growing in there.
- Uneven rooms. If some rooms never match the others, it may be the thermostat or the distribution.
Keeping it healthy
Raising the thermostat even one degree eases the load and the bill. Book an inspection each spring so the system is ready before you need it.
